Phasmophobia Beginner Tips: How to Survive Your First Ghost Hunt

Are you ready to step into the darkness, armed with nothing but your wits and a few gadgets, to face the unknown? Let's begin your first ghost hunt.

What is Phasmophobia?

At its core, Phasmophobia is a 4-player online co-op psychological horror game developed by Kinetic Games. Your objective is simple: enter haunted locations, gather paranormal evidence, identify the ghost type, and then escape. Sounds easy, right? It's anything but.

The game is designed to be immersive, using voice recognition for ghost interactions (yes, the ghosts hear you!) and a heavy emphasis on atmosphere rather than jump scares. You'll truly feel the tension as your sanity drains and the entity lurking in the shadows starts to hunt.

Your Mission Briefing: The Basics of Ghost Hunting

Before you even step foot into a cursed house, here’s what you need to know:

  1. The Objective: You and your team are paranormal investigators hired to identify a specific type of ghost haunting a location. You'll receive a whiteboard with objectives (e.g., "Get a photo of the ghost," "Detect a ghost with the EMF Reader") and the crucial "Evidence" section.
  2. Evidence: Each of the many Phasmophobia ghost types has three unique pieces of evidence it leaves behind (e.g., EMF Level 5, Spirit Box, Freezing Temperatures). Your job is to find two out of the three pieces of evidence to confidently identify the ghost.
  3. Sanity: This is your lifeblood. The lower your sanity, the more active and aggressive the ghost becomes. When your sanity drops too low (typically below 50%), the ghost can initiate a hunt, during which it will try to kill you.
  4. Equipment: You start with basic gear, but you'll unlock and buy more as you earn money from successful hunts. Each piece of equipment serves a purpose in gathering evidence or protecting your team.

Gearing Up: Your First Equipment Loadout

For your very first mission on a small map (like Tanglewood Street House), here's what you and your team should bring from the truck:

  • Flashlights: Essential for seeing in the dark. Don't leave home without one!
  • EMF Reader: Detects electromagnetic fluctuations caused by ghosts. Look for Level 5.
  • Spirit Box: Allows you to communicate with certain ghosts. Speak into your microphone.
  • Ghost Writing Book: Place it on the floor; some ghosts will write in it.
  • Thermometer: Detects Freezing Temperatures (below 0°C or 32°F).
  • Video Camera: Place it to watch rooms remotely from the truck. Useful for Ghost Orbs.
  • Photo Camera: Take pictures of evidence, ghost interactions, or the ghost itself for extra cash.
  • Crucifix: Place it to prevent a ghost from starting a hunt in its vicinity.

Your First Hunt: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Gear phasmophobia

Let's assume you've loaded into Tanglewood Street House – a classic starting map.

  1. The Van Phase:
    • Check the Whiteboard: In the back of the van, look at the whiteboard. Note your objectives and the "Evidence" section. This is your cheat sheet for identifying the ghost.
    • Grab Gear: Pick up your starting equipment. Communicate with your team: "Who's taking the EMF? Who's got the Spirit Box?"
    • Monitor Sanity & Activity: The monitor shows team sanity (average) and ghost activity. The map shows your location.
  2. Entering the Location:
    • Lights On: Your first priority is to find the fuse box and turn on the lights. This slows sanity drain significantly.
    • Search for the Ghost Room: Walk around with your EMF Reader and Thermometer. Look for:
      • Fluctuating EMF: Spikes on the EMF Reader indicate ghost presence. Level 5 is evidence!
      • Dropping Temperatures: Look for rooms where the temperature rapidly drops, especially below 10°C (50°F). Freezing Temperatures is evidence!
      • Ghost Events: Lights flickering, doors opening/closing, objects being thrown are all signs.
  3. Gathering Evidence: Once you suspect a ghost room (the room where the ghost is most active):
    • Set Up Equipment: Place a Ghost Writing Book on the floor. Set up a Video Camera facing a high-traffic area.
    • Use the Spirit Box: Turn off all lights in the room, stand in darkness, and ask questions like "Are you here?", "Give us a sign!", "Where are you?". Listen for responses through static.
    • Look for Ghost Orbs: Through the Video Camera in the van, check for floating, shimmering orbs in the ghost room. This is evidence!
    • Check for D.O.T.S Projector: (If you brought one) Place it; some ghosts will project an outline through its laser grid.
    • Fingerprints/Footprints: Use a UV Light on doors, windows, light switches. Look for glowing handprints or footsteps.
    • Ghost Photos: Snap pictures of any evidence you find (dirty water, thrown objects), or even the ghost itself!
  4. Identifying the Ghost:
    • Match Evidence: As you collect evidence, cross-reference it with the whiteboard in the van. When you have two or three pieces that uniquely match one ghost type, you've found your ghost!
    • Confirm: Once you're confident, select the ghost type on the laptop in the van.
  5. Exiting:
    • Complete Objectives: Try to finish all whiteboard objectives for maximum cash.
    • Escape: Once you've identified the ghost and completed objectives, you can leave. Head back to the van and press the car key to return to the lobby.

Beginner Tips for Your First Hunts:

  • Stick Together: Especially on your first few hunts, stay close to your teammates. There's safety in numbers, and you can share sanity.
  • Manage Sanity: Don't linger in the dark too long. Turn on lights, or return to the van periodically to regain sanity (not possible on all difficulties). Sanity Pills can also restore sanity.
  • Listen Closely: Pay attention to sounds. Footsteps, whispers, and growls can indicate ghost presence or an impending hunt.
  • Communicate: Use push-to-talk (V for local chat, B for radio) to call out findings or warn teammates. "EMF 5 in living room!" or "Ghost just walked past me!"
  • Don't Anger the Ghost: Saying its name too often or being overly aggressive can provoke it and speed up hunts.
  • Know When to Run: If the ghost starts to hunt (lights flicker rapidly, electronics glitch, doors lock), find a hiding spot immediately. Turn off your flashlight and electronics.

Phasmophobia offers endless replayability and increasingly terrifying encounters. With these basics, you're ready to take on the spectral residents of its many haunted locations. Good luck, and try not to scream too much!
